Second Annual Lecture & Panel Discussion

In March of 2021, the Texas State University Department of Philosophy hosted a virtual symposium on Dr. Hickman’s work, featuring Professor Paul Thompson of Michigan State University and Professor Ken Stikkers of Southern Illinois University. The event was attended by philosophers across the United States.

The virtual event, on “The Philosophy of Technology, Pragmatism, and Sustainability” featured reflections on the work of Larry A. Hickman, Professor Emeritus at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, who approaches the philosophy of technology using insights from the work of John Dewey.

The two philosophers offered comments on Hickman’s body of work: Paul B. Thompson is the W.K. Kellogg Chair in Agricultural, Food, and Community Ethics at Michigan State University and author of Sustainability: What Everyone Needs to Know. Ken Stikkers serves as Interim Chair & Professor of Philosophy and Africana Studies at Southern Illinois University and is author of Utopian Visions Past, Present and Future: Rethinking the Ethical Foundation of Economy. Dr Hickman responded to the reflections of professors Thompson and Stikkers, followed by questions from the audience.

The program was well attended by philosophers across the country, some of whom will be giving presentations at the 2022 tribute to Hickman’s life and work; so be sure to save these dates, March 24-26, 2022, and look for updates at the Hickman Legacy Project web page below:
